Direct Connections

What ExpressRoute gives you is a fast and reliable connection to Azure with bandwidths up to 100 Gbps delivered via AARNet Layer-2 and Layer-3 Virtual Private Network (VPN) connections. The choice and design of your direct connection option/s is dependent on how you plan to manage and integrate your Microsoft cloud services with other cloud infrastructure. AARNet can assist with these choices and implementation.

IPSec VPN over the internet

For non-critical workloads, you can take advantage of AARNet’s peering relationship with Microsoft and simply establish an IPSec virtual private network (VPN) between your equipment and the Azure cloud. Using the IPSec protocol ensures the connection is encrypted and your data is secure.

Charges and fees

Microsoft understands the need for academia to better manage costs when transitioning from traditional licensing to a consumption-based model, and has established an Internet egress fee waiver for qualified research and education institution customers.
