Western Sydney University (WSU) partnered with AARNet and Zoom to deploy Zoom and Zoom Rooms across their eight campuses and has seen video collaboration increase by 400% while video conferencing costs dropped dramatically.
We interviewed WSU CIO Kerry Holling and Senior Project Manager Geoff Lambert to learn more about the university’s Zoom deployment experience.
It started when Lambert and his team turned to AARNet. AARNet hosts Zoom on its high performing network, providing universities such as WSU with the best possible video conference experience, local Zoom support, and Zoom cloud recording integration with its storage application CloudStor.
“The partnership with AARNet really enabled agility for us. We were able to move beyond the technology and to go on to focus on how it would be rolled out staff and students and how it would be used in our teaching. Far more quickly than if we had to tried to engage and deploy our own infrastructure,” said Lambert.
Great performance and an easy user interface are key contributors to the rapid uptake by staff and academics. Also key to Zoom’s success at WSU, Lambert says, was Zoom’s responsiveness to fulfilling additional feature requests, including improved whiteboarding, polling, security group controls, hand raise, and waiting room.
WSU uses Zoom for a variety of uses cases. Academics use Zoom for online teaching and tutorials, as well as Zoom Video Webinars in their nursing and midwifery programs. The sessions can be recorded to the cloud and stored on the AARNet storage infrastructure. Zoom has become a vital tool for research, allowing WSU and other universities nationally and internationally to work together on projects.
