Researchers, academics and students visiting Australia come from far flung corners of the globe and thanks to eduroam, they can access the AARNet high speed network at institutions across the country.
From July 2015 to June 2016, 48,152 international visitors to Australia accessed eduroam via Australian institution networks and they came from 58 countries, with the United Kingdom, Germany, United States, Netherlands and Sweden the top 5 home countries logged. The pie chart above is representative of the number of unique users per country visiting Australia and accessing eduroam at Australian institutions during the 12-month period.
eduroam (education roaming) is the secure, worldwide roaming access developed for the international research and education community.
And it seems unstoppable, expanding across countries and beyond the education community. Since its launch in Europe in 2003, eduroam has gained popularity throughout the research and education community and is now available in 76 countries worldwide, the latest additions to the eduroam community being Mexico and Lebanon. Furthermore, eduroam is expanding beyond campuses to public, commercial and city Wi-Fi initiatives, providing an ever-increasing mobile platform for its multi-million users.
Eduroam is popular because it allows students, researchers and staff from participating institutions to obtain internet connectivity across campuses and when visiting other participating institutions quickly and easily, without the need to find local login details. Invented in the Netherlands eduroam has grown dramatically over the past 12 years and is on the verge of becoming a truly global connectivity tool.
AARNet manages the eduroam service for institutions in Australia. What our customers like most about eduroam is that it provides a single easy-to-use solution for their mobile connectivity requirements and conveniently removes the burden of institutional administration of guest network access. Users benefit from high-speed wireless connectivity at hundreds of participating institutions around the world and their data and privacy is protected.
