Breaking barriers for global high-speed data synchronisation

In this video, AARNet’s eResearch Director Guido Aben talks about a ground-breaking collaboration with CERN (The European Organization for Nuclear Research) that’s been testing new technologies for high speed data synchronisation and sharing services.

“We started doing global scale replication demos where they did the replication from CERN to Taiwan, we did the replication from Taiwan to Sydney and the entire system ticked over. I dare say that between CERN and ourselves we’re probably the only ones doing this at this scale, at this proper global scale, at these sorts of speeds right now. Data replication happens at these speeds, but that’s not file systems or object stores…”

When AARNet began building sync&share services a couple of years ago, the team looked for other nations with a similar use case: the need for high speed replications over vast distances, and there weren’t many peers with the same needs out there, except for CERN, and so an interesting and fruitful collaboration was born…
