AARNet supports popular turtle hatching event at World Science Festival Brisbane

We’re partnering with the Queensland Museum to live stream The Hatchery at WSFB in March 2024

AARNet is excited to again be working with the Queensland Museum to provide the live stream for the crowd favourite The Hatchery at the upcoming World Science Festival Brisbane (WSFB) 2024 in March.

The Hatchery gives visitors a rare opportunity to witness Australian Loggerhead Turtles emerging from their eggs in incubation chambers and their first experience into an ocean environment in specially designed seawater tanks. The experience, which welcomed almost 8,000 guests in 2023, also aims to raise awareness about ocean pollution and its impact on marine life.

In this collaboration between the Department of Environment Science and Queensland Museum, and with careful planning and consideration by turtle experts, hundreds of eggs have been hatched since WSFB began in 2016. After the WSFB 2023 The Hatchery event, over 100 Loggerhead Turtle hatchlings were released 20 kilometres off the Sunshine Coast.

With this annual event always selling out, AARNet will be facilitating the live stream capabilities for the incubation tanks from Wednesday 20 March until Sunday 24 March to give those who can’t be there in person an up-close view.

Visit the WSFB 2024 website to find out more about the event.
