Recording services
As part of AARNet's National Video Conferencing Service (NVCS), AARNet customers have option to record their conferences that are held on one of the AARNet's MCUs. This service is automated and integrated with the online booking system.
HOW IT WORKS ?
The conference needs to be held on one of AARNet bridges and it is recorded using the AARNet IPVCR device that is connecting to the conference as one of the participant.
There are 2 ways to schedule a conference recording :
- Using the advance mode of the online booking system (http://cmp.nvcs.edu.au/zimbra/) – you need to chose option VCR AARNet IPVCR - next to IPVCR in video section (see picture below). This will automatically start the recording the scheduled start of the conference. There is no video layout management = video layout is a default layout for this conference.
- By contacting NVCS stafff and organizing more customized recording (e.g. for events) – in this case one of our staff will ensure that the recording has started on time and will manage the custom layout requested. Minimum 2 week notice required for this option.
WHAT IS RECORDED ?
- Audio - All participants audio
- Video - Video layout can be customized (e.g. all participants in same size panes, voice switched view= only 1 speaker at a time and so one) .This is similar as for standard conference layout management and can be set up on request. For available layouts see picture below
- Content channel (H.239) recorded as a separate video stream (e.g. output video will have 2 panes : video participants + presentation)
HOW YOU RETRIEVE YOUR RECORDING ?
When conference finish, the recording can be retrieved from public folder on the AARNet IPVCR. All public recording are stored in “CMP Recordings (Public)” folder.
Please login as ‘guest’, no password required.

WHAT IS THE RECORDING FORMAT ?
There are two files available – the MPEG1 file (mixed) and .codian file (complete recording link).
You can download the free Codian MPEG and WM Converter Tool 1.0(1.3) . The latest version of the Codian converter tool allow for converting recordings from '.codian' format to MPEG-1 and WM formats. It will allow you to re-create a MPEG or WM stream with content separated or mixed how you like it – you can even extract H239 content as a JPEG sequence.
Please refer to the Codian documentation for details:
Converter Tools 1.0(1.3) Documentation.
If you would like to test the Codian Converter Tool you may wish to download one of our conferences that is available to public: ANU Digital Television & Media Services
