The Director of the Centre, Dr Donna Cross, Professor of Child and Adolescent Health is responding to the growing international and national concern regarding children’s rights to be educated in an environment free from violence, victimisation, and harassment, together with compelling research indicating that bullying can be significantly reduced and managed in the school setting.

The Child Health Promotion Research Centre (CHPRC) has conducted no less than seven major research studies to strengthen school and family actions to reduce bullying in primary and secondary schools. While engaging socially using technology is very popular with young people, it also provides a new medium for social cruelty and peer abuse commonly called cyber bullying.

Recent research conducted by the CHPRC, suggests that approximately 16% of Australian students in Years 4 to 9 are cyber bullied every few weeks or more.  The CHPRC is the only group in Australia currently developing and empirically testing a multi-faceted cyber bullying intervention program.

These projects will develop written and electronic resources to strengthen the capacity of young people, parents and schools to effectively and safely use communication technology and prevent or manage cyber bullying. AARNet is assisting CHPRC research with international communications and through collaboration on our cyber bullying/cyber safety research projects.
