The Macquarie Centre for Cognitive Science (MACCS) based at Macquarie University in Sydney,
is training the next generation of cognitive neuroscientists in Australia.

Collaborating with Japan’s Kanazawa Institute of Technology (KIT), the Academia Sinica in
Taiwan and partner institutions across Australia and New Zealand, MACCS is home to the
only magnetoencephalography (MEG) system in the world designed for use with children.

Researchers can explore phenomenon such as language acquisition and auditory processing
in children who are too young to participate in behavioural studies. Researchers can
interactively see how a child’s brain responds when they are reading, looking at pictures
or listening to speech. This opens up a whole new world for researchers as information can
now be gathered at the earlier stages of development.

AARNet connects MACCS with The University of Newcastle, Swinburne University of Technology, The Australian National University, The University of Melbourne and The University of Auckland.  These partners share, communicate and collaborate with their peers nationally and internationally across AARNet to drive research and knowledge in neuroscience.
